More settled conditions have only improved the fishing at Eyebrook. Bank anglers have enjoyed great sport with a mass off fish feeding on the abundance of corixa and fry in the margins. Dogwood bay and the Belle are fishing particularly well with most anglers choosing not to wade. Boats are enjoying long drifts across the basin and catching well to emerger and dry fly patterns.

The week started slow with changing conditions but settled by mid week. Ian Jobe boat fished, drifting from Mucky bay towards the willows and caught 7 fish on a mini snake. Dave Shaer fished from an anchored boat in front of the dam wall and also caught 7 fish on an intermediate and a white fritz lure.

Stuart Bildsen boat fished on Thursday in reasonably wet conditions. He drifted the mian basin and found feeding fish from the middle of the basin to Robbos. He fished a pair of foam daddies and caught 10 fish.

Warden Jobe Burnham fished twice this week during his days off. Firstly, on Tuesday he boat fished at the Chestnut tree and Mucky bay. Making short drifts over the weed he fished a pair of size 14 yellow Owl CDC’s and took a fish or two on most drifts. As the sun became more prevalent around mid-day less fish could be seen rising so after a couple of drifts of not connecting to a fish, Jobe changed tactics to a slow intermediate and a fry pattern he had tied the evening before. Making longer drifts and covering the slightly deeper water Jobe connected with several fish including a beautiful brown of around 4 lbs and a rainbow of close to 5lbs. After a successful day Jobe was keen to fish again and fished on Saturday. A strong cold west wind prevailed making presentation difficult. Jobe fished a orange daddy and a natural daddy 8 feet apart and caught fish drifting from the Hawthorn hedge into open water. The fish weren’t committing very well and several fish bow waved behind the fly and didn’t connect. Jobe finished the day having netted 10 good rainbows including one fine overwintered specimen of 4lb 6oz.

Conditions were ‘spot on’ on Sunday and lots of fish were showing. Bank angler Bob Margery bank fished. Catching 9 fish before 11 o’clock bob was pleased with his morning. He caught his fish on a red headed diawl bach fished on a washing line with a white booby on the point. The boats did equally well and fish were reported to have been caught from various areas of the reservoir. Rupert Gibson enjoyed some great dry fly action. Fishing with daddies and hoppers he boated 10 fish whilst drifting around the Island. Danny Lovegrove caught his 6 fish during an afternoon session on a floating fry and red Diawl Bachs whilst drifting from the middle of the basin to Robbos. Sundays rod average, a respectable 4 fish per rod.

Water Temperature is 17 degrees, 1100 rainbow trout stocked this week, bringing the season total to over 19,500 with another 6,000 to be stock over the next 8 weeks!

Not the easiest of weeks this week at Eyebrook. Mainly due to the changeable weather conditions. Things did improve into the weekend however with Sunday seeing a rod average of 3.9. The best sport is certainly to be had whilst fishing dries or in the top few inches of water. Boats have been drifting the main basin and have caught in most areas of the reservoir. Bank anglers have struggled with the northerly winds but caught over the weekend from the dam wall and Hawthorn hedge. Damsels, Blobs and fry patterns are working fished on a floating line. Diawl bachs and corixa patterns working well around the margins fished on a washing line. Dries are the most productive way of fishing at the moment. Cdc’s,, shipman’s, hoppers and daddies are all working.

Stuart Bilsden and John Woodings boat fished on Monday. Taking 11 fish to the boat on daddies, Cdc’s and hoppers the pair found feeding fish 100 yards off Robbos cabin and drifted the area for most of the day. Conditions were terrible for Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong north winds and heavy rain did not do the fishing any good. A few hardy anglers braved it. Neil Benjamin and Ian Simmons boat fished and caught 6 fish on a black CDC taking shelter from the wind off the point of the island.

Friday and into the weekend fished considerably better. More fish were feeding on the surface and anglers reported more confident takes. Dr T Holmes and Mr D Dearman boat fished. Starting their drifts from the Island and drifting towards Pollards jump the pair caught 10 fish on natural foam daddies. Father and Son team Mr D and P Angell boat fished and caught 9 super rainbows. They found the fish went on the feed after 5.00 and were taking off the surface. They fished a crippled midge and a Yellow owl CDC drifting around the Island.

Sunday saw the best rod average of the week, a much more like it 3.9 with serval anglers catching 10 plus fish. Damsel worked and the usual dries, CDC and hoppers. Mr Jacobs caught 10 fish for an afternoon session fishing a Yellow Owl or a claret Hopper. Greame Bell had a cracking day netting fish continuously throughout the day. He finished up with 18 to the boat caught ona mix of Owls and a minkie fry pattern from all over the main basin. Mr Bettinson and grandson caught 6 fish for their morning session from the dam wall. Hopefully with more settled conditions the rod average will remain high. It won’t be much longer before we start to see daddies appear on the water. Which will certainly get the fish into a feeding frenzy. Orange foam daddies always seem to work best here at Eyebrook.

Please note the beginner’s tuition day on the 2nd September is now fully booked.

Please remember due to the wild population of brown trout we ask that ALL brown trout are to be returned to the water.

Water Temperature is 17 degrees, 1100 rainbow trout stocked this week, bringing the season total to over 19,500 with another 6,000 to be stock over the next 8 weeks!

Weekly Rod Average; 1.6

Eyebrook remains consistently inconsistent! Various methods working on any day as the conditions have been changeable. The fish however remain in the top 6 feet and when conditions allow will go on the feed on the surface. Dries have been working, keep them small and a single fly so not to spook fish. Washing line has caught fish, Dial bachs with a foam daddy on the point working well. Lures have also caught, cats whisker or damsels retrieved at speed also catching.

The bank fish has slowed slightly this week, cooler evenings have made the fish reluctant to rise with less fly life on the water. Boats are still catching from various areas of the reservoir. Long drifts across the main basin being most productive.

Mick Cartlidge and Phil Harding got the week off to a good start. Fishing a fast glass line and damsels during the bright morning and switching to dries during the afternoon they got it right on the day. Boating 30 plus fish to 3 and a half pounds. The pair fished Mucky bay during the morning and drifted the main basin with orange shipman’s, Yellow owls and Kate Mclarens during the afternoon.

The English Disabled fly fishers held the annual Presidents cup match on Wednesday. 19 anglers fished the friendly competition on floating lines only. Top rod on the day was H Pritchett taking his 4 fish and catch and releasing a further 3 put him on top spot. Best fish of the day went to Trevor Ashby a lovely silvered fish of 2lb 8oz. ‘H’ and Trev shared a boat for the day and drifted the basin, starting long drifts from near the tower and finishing out from Robbos Cabin. They caught on various methods but Trev reported small black nymphs working best fished on a washing line. The fish that were spooned later in the day had a small number of black buzzers and corixa in them.

Thursday the wind blew! Only a hand full of hardy anglers tackled the 20 plus miles an hour winds from the North West. Nick Lamyman was one of those brave souls. He boat fished with regular boat partner Bill Hill. After a struggle, they finally got their anchor to hold in front of the dam wall and fished the best they could considering the conditions. Nick caught a fish second cast and the pair were hopeful for a successful trip! A couple of hours passed without any offers or fish to the boat so Nick changed tactics and fished deep on Di7 line and a large white lure. It wasn’t long before Nicks rod went right round and a good fish had taken his fly mid water. After a long fight Nick netted a super brown trout which was estimated to weight over 7lbs. The pair resided to the lodge pleased with their mornings achievements.

Friday fished the most consistently between anglers of the week. A respectable average of 2.95 fish a rod. Oliver Mills caught 5 fish on various lures on a floating line. Member Stuart Bilsden and Tony Tibbett caught 9 fish between them on Yellow Owl Cdc’s from across the main basin. Mark Hunt also had a good afternoon session, netting 8 fish whilst fishing a Midge tip, with a cats whisker on the point and two crunchers drifting the basin.

Please remember due to the wild population of brown trout we ask that ALL brown trout are to be returned to the water.

Water Temperature is 17.5 degrees, we shall be stocking a further 550 rainbow trout this week, bringing the season total to over 18,500!

Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly report ending week ending 30th July 2017

Weekly Stats:

Number Rods: 114       Number Trout Taken: 75     Number Trout Released: 118 Total Catch: 193   Weekly Rod Average; 1.69

Eyebrook continues to fish well for the time of year. Lots of fish showing in the surface and in to the margins. Bank anglers have enjoyed good sport into the evenings, with lots of fish feeding on corixa and fry close into the margins a hairs ear CDC or nymphs fished on a washing line have worked well. Boats have been spread out for most of the week with catches being reported from all around the reservoir. Long drifts across the basin accounting for most fish on small dries.

Changeable conditions for the week previous meant the fish were very much on and off. Change in barometric pressure always has aninfluenceon the fishing. It is believed the change from low to high or high to low unsettles the fishes feeding patterns making them uncomfortable and lethargic.

Jason James paid another visit to Eyebrook at the start of the week. Fishing his ‘Dukes deadly’ a pattern he ties himself from orange seals fur, Jason caught 8 fish for his morning session. Jason fishes a single dry fly on 5lb tippet material. With clarity, still ‘gin clear’ many anglers are reporting lots of offers to the dries with many fish coming short and turning away at the last second.

Eyebrook regular Ken Waters boat fished Sams Dyke with a single Yellow Owl CDC, Ken caught 4 fish and had plenty of offers to keep him entertained. Ken is in a wheel chair and takes advantage of our wheely boats. Eyebrook has great facilities for the disabled angler, wheely boats are available for £17 a day or £10 for a part day. (pictures on our facebook page flyfishstore).

Thursday saw a healthy rod average of 3.27. Conditions were more settled, with cloud cover and a good breeze the fish were feeding just under the surface. John Eaton and Bill Presgrave boat fished near to the dam wall and had great success on a Diawl Bach fished on a washing line to keep it in the top few inches. The pair boated 10 fish between them. Head ranger Jobe Burnham got a float on his day off and boat fished with member Richard Watson. The pair drifted the basin fishing dries. Jobe stuck with the trusted Yellow Owl and Richard fished a firey brown shipman’s type pattern. Jobe had 39 offers to the dries but only hooked 9. Richard had a better hook up rate, hooking 5 and netting 3 for a dozen offers.

Mick Bennett took a day off work to celebrate his birthday and chose to spend it at Eyebrook. He boat fished, catching 8 fish during his short 4 hour session. Mick fished damsel patterns on a floating line. Casting to fish and retrieving at speed as soon as his flies touched the water he was rewarded with ferocious takes.

Member Bill Law fished the bank on Saturday morning. He chose to fish his favourite spot the Hawthorn hedge. Bill fished with two size 14 CDC’s, fished almost static. Bill caught 5 lovely conditioned rainbows and had many more offers too.

The weather forecast looks similar for the week ahead so fishing should remain consistent. Call the lodge on 01536 772 930 or visit our Facebook page flyfishstore for the latest reports.

An interesting week at the ‘Brook’. Changeable conditions and water temperature meant tactics and success rates changed on a daily basis. With much fresher conditions from mid-week on water temperature fell each day and each day more fish could be seen and caught from the surface.

The week started bright and warm. Water temperatures of 22 degrees with little fish showing, apart from fish coming up from the depths and leaping clear of the surface to free themselves of any parasites. Richard Watson and boat partner Bill Whittle found the fish though. Anchored 60 yards from the dam wall they caught a dozen fish between them on black buzzers and a damsel nymph as their point fly fished on a long leader on a floating line. Brian Skey also had a cracking day, netting 6 fish and loosing as many whilst fishing nymphs over deep water.

Tuesday was a challenging day, a change in wind speed and direction resulted in the fish dispersing all around the reservoir. Head ranger Jobe, did however see a good few fish over the weed beds along the willow trees feeding fiercely on the abundance of damsel. Anglers however found the fish hard to tempt as often is the case when fish are so preoccupied on damsel nymphs.

Wednesday brought the first day of change, dull drizzly conditions with the odd thunderstorm heard in the distance. The occasional fish showed but were hard to tempt. Things did improve into the evening and a few very good quality fish were feeding along the dam wall. Very heavy rain fell overnight and into Thursday morning. Offering much fresher conditions and a lowered water temperature fish moved up into the top layers of water and into the margins. Bob Thompson had a good day, boating 4 fish. Tony Tibbett and Stuart Bilsden caught 9 between them fishing daddies near to Old Road and Sam’s Dyke. Jude Tuffs bank fished at the Hawthorns and took 4 good rainbows. Member Mark Hunt and ranger Jobe fished the bank into the evening. What a frustrating evening it was! Fish galore, rising, and pushing water right into the margins. Jobe caught 3 fish, one to a diawl bach, another on a buzzer and the third on a hare’s ear. So, he finished the evening none the wiser to what the fish were feeding on. On reflection, I think the fish that were pushing water and breaking the surface were predominantly feeding on fry and others were taking corixa in the weed. Mark caught 2 fish to a diawl bach and a fry pattern.

The weekend fished respectively well for the time of year. The fish are certainly feeding in the surface and dries or a washing line accounted for the majority of fish. Roy Swinfied caught 4 fish for his morning session from the dam wall fishing black buzzers on a washing line. All abilities friendly fly fishers held another outing to Eyebrook. They enjoyed good conditions on Sunday, a nice breeze and cloud cover meant dries fished well. Mark Goodge caught 8 fish on one of his favourite flies. A ginger Tom. Mark estimated he had 60 fish come to his flies throughout the day which certainly kept him focused. Fred Kettle also enjoyed the quality dry fly sport. Netting 6 fish all from the main basin. Will Fenn made the most of our afternoon boats which start at 3.00pm and cost just £15 for two anglers or £13.50 for a single man boat. Will fished in front of the dam and caught 3 fish on a black buzzer and blood worm.

Wet and windy weather is forecast for the week ahead which will keep the temperatures down. Don’t be put off by a little bit of rain, it often fishes well after a shower. Water clarity is gin clear at the moment, this explains the amount of offers and refusals to dries anglers have been reporting over the past few days. Try fishing a single dry on as lighter leader as you’d dare, and your hook up rate should improve.

A ‘Challenging’ start to the week. Bright conditions with little or no wind at times, and water temperatures of 22.5 degrees made it hard for even the most experienced of anglers. Conditions did improve into the latter half of the week and weekend. Water temperature has now fallen to a much more preferred 19 degrees and fish are in and around the surface. Nymphs fished in the top 4 feet working best at the moment, along the lodge bank. Dogwood, The Belle and Hawthorns are holding a lot of fish. There are a few fish up in the shallows around The Cow Shed which seems to produce the better fish at the moment. When conditions are right dries are catching fish. The favourite yellow Owl CDC accounting for a lot of fish this week.

The bank is fishing exceptionally well for the time of year. Lots of fish in the margins around the weed beds. Weed growth is at its lowest for the time of year I have seen it for many years. Therefore 99% of the bank is fishable. Weed cutting will commence if or when weed becomes an issue. Black buzzer, Diawl Bachs and Damsels are all working well from the bank.

Geoff Smith of Blaston managed 3 fish for an evening session on Monday, in very challenging conditions. Geoff caught his fish on small dries whilst bank fishing at the Belle. The fish are feeding best either in the morning or evenings whilst temperatures are at the lowest.

The rod average remained around 1 for Tuesday and Wednesday with sinking lines catching the few fish anglers managed to tempt. The weather changed from Wednesday onwards. Much cooler air temperature, cloud cover and a brisk breeze much improved returns. By Friday the water temperature had dropped to 19 degrees and the fish had returned to the surface layers. David Sowell enjoyed a quick morning session. Bank fishing from the Hawthorn Hedge, David caught 6 fish on a CDC and pheasant tail nymph. Karl Cowzer boat fished and netted 7 quality rainbows to the notorious Yellow Owl.

Saturdays returns were the best of the week. A healthy 3.2 fish a rod with boat and bank anglers evenly matched. Jerry Barnes manged 4 fish from the Belle and missed a few offers on Dial Bachs and a CDC.

Andre Russel went a float in his float tube along with two members from the Float tube association. Float tubes offer the angler a unique way of fishing. Fishing low to the surface it allows anglers to see fish moving and with little or no noise you can manoeuvre yourself close to fish even into the margins without spooking them. All three anglers caught well. Mr Frakes caught 7, Mr Dunnett caught 4 and Andre finished with 3. All fish caught were in the top 5 feet on dries and nymphs

No launch fee for tubers at Eyebrook with a full days tubing available from £17.50 or the last 4 hours for £10.00

Tony Gile boat fished with his Son Paul on Sunday. The pair had 14 fish to the boat on a MOP fly, small damsel and a Candy Sput Fab. They fished over deep water around the tower and dam.

Temperatures are going to rise again this week so fishing will be best in the mornings or evenings. Call the lodge for the most up-to-date reports or visit our Facebook page flyfishstore.

Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly Stats:

A very mixed week at Eyebrook, which started extremely well. Monday saw a rod average of 4.3, with lots of fish feeding in the surface and being caught on dries whilst drifting the main basin. Unfortunately, the fun didn’t last though, Wednesday saw the return of warm weather, increasing the surface water temperature to over 20 degrees. Surface temperature at 7.30 am on Monday 10th was touching 22 degrees. Cooler weather is forecast for the week ahead, mixed with a stronger breeze should cool the water somewhat.

Best Methods currently are fast sinking lines fishing in the main basin in 30 feet plus of water. Size 10 black buzzers will catch fish as will damsels, snakes and tubes. The secret is to wait for your line to sink and then wait another 30 seconds before retrieving to reach depths of 30 feet. The bank fishing is extremely challenging at the moment. Most anglers fishing first or last thing with limited success.

Monday saw the best returns of the week, most anglers fished dries and fish were caught all over the reservoir, Mr Fox had a very good day fishing a size 14 CDC whilst drifting various areas of the reservoir. He caught most of his fish before 2 pm as the sun did show slightly. Mr Duxbury also had a very enjoyable day, netting 15 fish again on a CDC. Bill Law bank fished and caught 3 fish during his morning session from the Hawthorn hedge.

Tuesday the rod average dipped slightly, but was a respectable 3.8. Again, lots of fish showing and dries worked well. Karl Cowzer caught over a dozen fish to size 16 traditional dries whilst drifting the main basin. Roger Gibbons had an extremely good day. Roger was straight into fish on his first drift. Fishing an orange hopper and a CDC casting to fish. Roger had caught 6 fish by 11am including a fish of 4lb when he resigned to the lodge for a coffee break. He finished the day with 13 fish to the boat. Bob Margery ventured to the north end of the reservoir and fished the cow shed to stoke dry old road. He caught 11 fish of which 5 he weighed in for a good weight of 12lb 6oz. Bob fished a washing line with dial bachs.

Wednesday saw the first day of challenging conditions, very bright, flat calm and extremely hot spelt disaster for dry fly anglers. The water temperature soon rose and the fish quickly dissented. Mr Holmes fished the buzzer and bung. A deadly method for flat calm conditions. He was rewarded with 9 fish from the dam wall.

Fishing remained challenging into the weekend with a rod average around 1 fish per rod most days. Mid Northants fly fishers held their Eric Godman trophy competition on Sunday. All competitors knew from the start it wasn’t going to be easy. Most fished deep in front of the dam wall. The best bag of 2 fish went to Frazer Duffy Jnr. His best two fish weighed in at 5lb 9oz. Best fish of the day was a 3lb 5oz rainbow caught by Seumas Halliday which took a snake fished of a sinking line. Overall rod average was 1.5.

I would like to welcome two new members of staff to the Eyebrook team. Toff Crowther and Graham Henfrey. Both of which will be acting as evening boat men and will offer help with the boat and your tackle when you return to the pontoons of an evening.

A much-improved week at Eyebrook. Lots of fish showing and feeding in the surface. Boat anglers are enjoying long drifts across the main basin, catching on dries such as a yellow owl CDC or hoppers. Nymphs fish high in the water are also doing very well. Red holographic diawl bachs and black buzzers catching their share of fish. Fished on a washing line with a foam daddy or booby on the point.

The bank is fishing much better again especially into the evenings. Fish are feeding in just a few feet of water in Sam’s Dyke and around the Island. There are lots of small dark sedge into the evenings, G&R sedge, CDC’s or shipman’s buzzers working well.

Jason James enjoyed his day on Tuesday, boat fishing at Stoke Dry and Old Road. Jason saw fish rising but struggled to suss out what they were taking. After a couple of hours of changing and trying different dries he finally started to connect to fish. Jason fish a single dry he ties himself. “Dukes Deadly “a sparsely tied orange seal fur dry, tied on a size 14. Jason finished mid-afternoon having caught 6 great conditioned rainbows. Ian Godfrey visiting Eyebrook from Ireland had a good start to his three days fishing, catching 8 fish on various tactics from Mucky bay and the Island.

Dave Adams and Lou brooks fished on Wednesday. Conditions were not great, a strong north wind put quite a chop on the water. The pair took shelter in Sams Dyke anchoring in 4 feet on water. They fished red holographic Dial bachs on a washing line with a FAB on the point. The pair finished the day with 20 fish between them including a 4lb 8 brown trout. Member Clive Moore also caught a brown trout of Wednesday which was estimated to weigh around 5lb. All brown trout are to be returned to the water.

Thursday fished exceptionally well with all 28 anglers catching fish. The rod average was a respectable 7.04, pretty good for the last week of June! Most anglers drifted, fishing dries. Orange hoppers worked well for Ron Gent and Martin Rowson, the pair caught all over the reservoir. Martin had the best fish of the day, 4lb plus brown. Bob Smith bank fished at the Hawthorn hedge and caught fish all morning on a small CDC. Mr Bircumshaw caught a dozen fish on a washing line technique, fishing buzzers static with a FAB on the point.

Lee Henfrey guided Simon Walton for his first mornings fly fishing with Simon landing 3 trout on a cruncher.

Jobe Burnham was also busy guiding clients at Eyebrook with Andy Lilliy & Chris Goodwin taking advantage of Jobe knowledge of fly fishing for the pike with both enjoying a successful morning.

Sean Cutting enjoyed a day a float at Eyebrook. Making short drifts out of mucky bay he caught serval fish on dries. Mike Duxbury made the most of our afternoon boats and caught 5 fish on a sedge pattern casting to rising fish into the evening. The good sport continued into the weekend. Lots of boats drifting the open water fishing dries and nymphs. Water temperature is now settled at 17 degrees resulting in plenty of fish in or near the surface. The bank fished well over the weekend and there is still little or no weed to mention. Dave Chadwick bank fished the Belle and was rewarded with 8 fished for his morning. All Dave’s fish came to a size 12 CDC. Pete Line boat fished, drifting the willows he found the better fish. Fishing hoppers Pete tempted 7 great rainbows out, the best close to 3lbs.

We will continue to stock fortnightly throughout July and August and return to weekly stockings for the remainder of the season. We have stocked 17,025 fish to date and will stock a further 8300 before the end of the season. The season rod average is currently 5.55

Pike Fly Fishing – Eyebrook Reservoir

Pike fly fishing at Eyebrook Trout Fishery

June 16th 2017 fly fishing for Eyebrook pike

The gentle art of fly fishing combined with the largest still water predator in the United Kingdom sounds like a strange mix too many but it’s an awesome sport! There’s nothing like watching a fish that looks like a submarine take a fly at the side of the boat and then watch as it accelerates away and your reel screams.

The Eyebrook Pike record is currently 28lb caught on the fly by Andy Miller from the Chestnut tree 10 years ago. Last season the record was almost broken with two fish of 27lb caught by warden Jobe Burnham and a 27lb 7oz fish caught by local angler Jason Morris. Can someone beat the 28lb record this season? or maybe break the 30lb mark? I am sure there are fish of 30lb in the reservoir. I have personally seen fish that almost scare me they are that big!

Eyebrook Reservoir is a 400-acre trout fishery on the Leicestershire and Rutland border. It is a big expanse of water and can seam daunting especially on your first visit but has a good head of pike so your fly is never far away from what could be the fish of a life time. The fishery staff are always helpful and will try their best to point you in the right direction but a guide is recommended on your first visit. Guiding is available throughout the Pike season, (16th June – 29th October) with fishery warden Jobe Burnham. Please call the lodge if you would like to book or would like any further information. 01536 772 930 or 07738490667

Please be aware pike fly fishing may be suspended during prolonged periods of hot weather.

If you are planning a visit to Eyebrook please book boats and check our rules at regulations at http://www.flyfisheyebrook.co.uk/2017/06/15/eyebrook-update-15th-june/

Not the easiest of weeks for fly fishing. Water temperatures reached 22.5 degrees making the fish hard to find in the depths of the “Brook. The weather for the last week of June is looking much improved and I’m pleased to report seeing fish rising over the most areas of the reservoir.

The majority of boats this week fished the main basin, drifting from Dogwood and the Belle across the deep water or anchoring off the dam wall. Most opting to fish a high-density line to reach depths of 20 feet plus. Damsels, blobs and other lures worked or buzzers, size 10 fished static. Bank anglers found conditions particularly ‘challenging’. Most fishing the hawthorns, Belle and dam wall with limited success until late evening when occasionally the odd trout could be tempted.

Loy and McIlroy got the week to a good start, catching a dozen plus each fishing buzzers at depth in front of the damn wall. Warden Jobe Burnham fished on his day off, along with Eyebrook Member Clive Moore. The pair anchored in 40 feet of water and preceded to fish size 8 and 10 buzzers at various depths. Clive was quickly into fish on a Di 8 line fishing his buzzers at 25 feet. Jobe set his line to a similar depth and also started to catch. Jobe was joined by his partner Georgina in the evening, a rare occasion. Georgina isn’t particularly keen on fly fishing. She enjoyed her evening though, catching 4 fish in 2 and a half hours. Not bad for a beginner! (pictures on our Facebook page, flyfishstore)

Eyebrook held the Anglers World Holidays fly fish championships on Friday and Saturday. 30 anglers took to the water on Friday with great anticipation. Conditions were ‘challenging’. A strong west wind blew and the water temperature was well over 20 degrees. The first day was won by our very own Lee Henfrey, “top angling Lee”! (Lee is available for guiding please contact the lodge for further information) He fished the main basin with a H D line to reach the depths. Lee Caught 10 fish for a weigh, including bonuses of 20lb 12oz. Second place went to Belgium angler Gerrt Jansenns with 7 fish for 15lb 2oz and third Chris Guthrie with 6 fish for 12lb 15oz. Chris bucked the trend and fished size 14 dies drifting from the Belle and Hawthorns. The first day saw an overall average of 2.57.

The second day, the floating line competition saw a much-improved average of 5.65 and as won by top angler Bill McIlroy. Bill caught 17 fish for a weigh including bonuses of 33lb 4oz. Second place went to Craig Barr who fished dries and third Christian Jadouille. The best fish of the competition were two fish of 3lb 4oz caught by Bill McIlroy and Martin Griffiths. Unfortunately for Martin, Bills bag weighed more so therefore Bill received the ‘Wild card’ prize on Friday for the biggest fish. Martin however managed the best fish of the Saturday, a 2lb 13oz specimen. Well done to all competitors and thank you to John Horsey for ensuring the competition was so well organised. Full results can be found on our Facebook page flyfishstore.

Sunday saw a good number of bank anglers sat Eyebrook. Dave Chadwick caught 4 fish from the Belle on a pin fry pattern he tied himself. Steve Lawrence also caught 4 fish on blobs and damsels. Dave Etty Boat fish and caught 4 fish on a size 14 CDC.

The water temperature is now falling and fishing is improving by the day. The rain fall forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday will also help so we anticipate good fishing for Thursday and into the weekend. We are now allowing pike fly fishing once again as water temperatures have dropped.
