Another season has once again come and gone, but don’t worry its only 17 weeks until opening day !

I have certainly used the word ‘challenging’ a lot this season. Conditions were often against us and with the hottest summer for many years, water temperatures were consistently over 25 degrees for many weeks. Far from optimum temperature for fly fishing! Let’s not forget the good fishing we have seen this season however, a season average of 4 is very respectable. Once we’d got the beast from the east behind us and the colour had fallen out of the reservoir, April averaged 7.6 fish a rod for the month. As the water temperatures tentatively increased we saw our prolific buzzer hatches increase. Bank anglers enjoyed the best f the sport, Sam’s Dyke, The Island, Pollards Jump and the Northern Shallows all fished spectacularly well. May is always one of my favourite months here at Eyebrook. Temperatures rise and the fish start to disperse into the open water. Drifting boats start to come into their own covering water and casting to rising fish. 1173 anglers visited Eyebrook throughout May and caught 4,304 fish, with many overwintered fish coming to the dries in open water. Water quality has been excellent all year with the water being ‘gin clear’ from May to October, we even had an increased number of Mayflies hatch this year. During May we had the biggest trout of the season caught, Steve Rainbow landed a 12lb specimen, with a full tail and in superb condition the fish had clearly been feeding hard of the fry for many years in the brook. The fish took a tube in 30ft of water.

The summer months of June and July took their toll. With air temperatures regularly over 30 degrees it was uncomfortable for anglers and the fish. Eyebrook is a relatively shallow reservoir, with 400 acres only average 17 feet leaving nowhere for the fish to hide. Eyebrook held the disabled international at the end of June. Two days of fishing in blistering heat was hard for all concerned. England finished second behind Scotland, with wales finishing third followed by Ireland. Eyebrooks next major event was the 6-man team loch style championships, organised by the Angling Trust. A whole new competition format with 11 teams fishing three sessions a day, over two days, with a prize pot of £6500 it brought the very best anglers in the country to the Eyebrook. The competition was also shown on BT sport, showing Eyebrook and fly fishing to a massive audience. Thank you to everyone who helped us with stewards for these events, your support is very much appreciated.

Temperatures started to fall quickly into to August and the fish perhaps became acclimatised to their hot water environment. Averages soon improved and by the middle of the month anglers were seeing and catching good numbers of fish of of the surface, from across the basin. Emerger patterns, daddies and hoppers were all working well. August averaged 4.68 fish a rod, compared to 2.4 for the 2017 season, it almost made up for the poor month previous.

September is when Eyebrook does what is renowned for, world class top of the water sport. This year it didn’t disappoint. The reservoir was extremely busy with club outings, travelling anglers and our regular rods. The rod average was consistently at 5 fish a rod with dries working very well. The boat anglers enjoyed the best of the sport with the fish holding over deep water, bank anglers found it difficult to find fish in to the margins. There were few crane flies on the water this season, most probably due to the dry summer we had seen. The season finished with respectively warm water temperatures. Most fish came to dries, with fish slowly turning to the fry. We didn’t see the fry feeders that we have seen in previous years, but we did see a huge amount of fry around the boat frontage. We put this down to the lack of cold weather we have seen this October. There were some good fry feeders caught however, Ian Jobe caught the best ‘back end’ rainbow at 6lb 10oz on a mini snake. Warden Toff Crowther caught a 7lb 12oz brown and several anglers recorded brown trout of over 6lb.

Pike fishing at Eyebrook has been incredible this season and has certainly put Eyebrook on the map as a specimen pike water. Pike fishing is strictly fly only with the season starting from the 16^th June. The previous Eyebrook Pike record was a 28lb fish caught by Mr Andy Miller around 12 years ago. No fish had come to rival that record until this season with several fish breaking the 30lb mark and the new record being set at 39lb, caught by Mr Danny Leet mid-October on a very foggy morning. Pike fly fishing is a great alternative to trout fly fishing and is available to anyone. For advice and rules ask a member of staff at the lodge.

Eyebrook will hold an open day on Sunday 16^th December where we will be taking payment for memberships. We will also be holding the Spring fair along side Eyebrook tackle shop, a date for this this during February is yet to be confirmed.

A very up and down week this week at Eyebrook, due to the strong north winds. The averages changed between 4.0 and 0.5 daily.

North winds always have an adverse effect on the Eyebrook. Blowing straight down the reservoir into the dam wall, leaving little shelter for boat anglers to get out of the wind.

Monday and Tuesday were both challenging days. Simon K battled in the wind on Tuesday and caught 4 fish on traditional wet flies. Wednesday was much improved with less wind anglers could drift the basin in relevant comfort. Clive Moore and Ian Jobe had another successful trip catching over 20 fish to the boat whilst drifting the basin with small fry pattern on a floating line. Brent Hart float tubed during the evening and caught 3 fish again on fry pattern.

Thursday was much warmer and the rod average for the day increased to 4.1 fish a rod! 17 anglers caught 71 fish for the best returns of the week. Mr Alan Wither caught 8 fish on an olive minkie or white and silver minkie. Mr Colin Hendry caught 6 on a black buzzer and a muddler fished on the point. Members Roy Swinfield and Dave Scholefield found the fish off the tower and chose to anchor. They fished with fry patterns on various lines from a Di3 to a floating line to net over a dozen fish.

Member Steve Lawrence was the only angler to have much success on Friday. He fished a Di5 and tube fly to catch 8 fish in the rough conditions. Saturday was almost impossible to fish with high winds and freezing rain. Most anglers had given up by lunch time. Steve Rainbow was last boat in and had returned 3 fish on a di5 and tubes.

Sunday saw Eyebrook Fur and Feather Match for 2018. Cold and windy conditions once again meant it was a real challenge for the best of anglers. Biggest fish was caught by Roy Swinfield at 2lb 2oz. First place went to Mr Hancox and Mr Price with 3 fish 5lb 5oz with Mr Lamyman and Mr Hill coming a close second with 3 fish 5lb 2oz.

Several pike anglers have been fishing this week. No monsters this week but fish were caught to over 20lbs with several high teen fish being caught as well.

As the season draws to a close the fishing has become ‘changeable’ and often challenging this week. Unseasonable warm weather for the majority of the week resulted in an abundance of fly life, which is rather unexpected for the time of year. Extremely small buzzers and a mass of small aphid flies were on the water. Fish were topping continuously in pods and were extremely challenging to catch. A single ‘F’ fly or ‘CDC’ worked as well as anything, fished static and generally it was best not to cast to the fish as they were extremely spooky on bright calm days. A hard frost Friday morning did change this, and the fish started to focus more onto the fry again. Minkie and fry patterns fished on a floating line or intermediate worked, in front of the dam wall or into the basin. Member Dave Shaer caught the best fish of the week, a 6lb brown that took a white minkie fished on an intermediate. Dave saw a lot of surface action from fry feeders in a small area out from the tower and was excited when his line tightened up. Please remember all brown trout are to be returned.

The big news this week at Eyebrook has been the Pike fly fishing. A new record has been set and a very impressive one at that. Danny Peet caught a 39lb monster on his second cast of the day! Danny and boat partner Rick Varley set off in dense fog, Rick hadn’t got his rod set up when Danny on his second cast hooked the fish! After being weight by the fishery staff the fish went away strongly. None of us know where the fish was caught however, we couldn’t see for the fog!

Monday was an extremely wet and cold day and most anglers found things challenging. Fry patterns worked as well as anything with Tim White taking 4 fish from Harrison’s on a black zonker. Tuesday saw almost perfect conditions and the fish fed all day on the surface. Many anglers were getting frustrated with the amount of offers they were having to the dries with out hooking a fish. P Oakley and D Collingham manged 5 fish in front of the dam wall and Dave Schofield caught 4 fish on a size 14 double decker.

Wednesday saw a much-improved average of 3.8 fish a rod. Again, lots of fish feeding on the surface in front of dam wall, Three tress and across the basin to the Three trees. Clive Moore caught 7 fish on blobs and boobies just sub surface. Ian Jobe continues to have a lot of success on a mini snake patterns and caught 12 fish from across the basin. Andy Birkett and boat partner Brent Vinall had a very successful session on small buzzers and dry fly patterns they caught 22 fish between them including fish of over 3lbs.

Bob Thompson fished in challenging conditions on Thursday, he fished a washing line and size 14 Daiwl bachs to net 8 fish. Mark Hunt fished into the Evening and caught 5 fish on an extremely small CDC fished static.

Memebers Dave Chadwick and Bob Margery boat fished on Saturday morning. The pair caught 9 fish between them on Cats whiskers, blobs and minkies. Tom Finney and friend Ollie Jenkinson targeted the predators in the reservoir after hearing of the monster caught the day previous they were particularly optimistic. They caught several fish the best weighed in at 23lb 8oz followed by a 19lb 8 oz specimen.

Sunday was a glorious autumn day. Extremely bright and a breeze wasn’t perfect for fishing, but the fish were still on the surface. All be it hard to catch, most success came to fry tactics. Steve Lawrence caught 11 fish on a mix of flies, but the majority came to a popper minkie fished with a figure of eight retrieve across the surface. Jerry Barnes fished for a short morning session and caught 6 fish on a minkie fished on a floating line.

A very autumnal week has past. Varying wind speed, direction and air temperatures changed fishing methods and locations daily. In the right conditions the fishing was sublime. Mid-week there was a mass of small aphid flies being blown on to the water and a hatch of tiny buzzers. Fish could be seen rising continuously in pods across the basin and dam wall. The size of these tiny flies made it a challenge to select a small enough pattern to interest the fish, I heard of many anglers using size 16 dries or buzzers to get a pull. Fry patterns are also becoming more apparent on the returns page and are the best options in rougher water on more blustery days. There is a huge abundance of fry this year, particularly out from the lodge corner and around the tower, but also in Harrison’s corner and along the weed beds to Sam’s dyke. A single white or grey minkie fished on a floating line, intermediate or Di3 will all worked, as did a snake or tube flies fished on a fast sinking line with a fast retrieve from the depths.

The early part of the week fished very well for the time of year. Monday and Tuesday both had averages of over 4 fish a rod. Mark Goodge and Ian Bradfield had an excellent day and caught well on dries and fry patterns, suspender minkies caught very well being pulled though the surface. Mr Hunt and Mr Horner had an excellent session fishing dries through the middle of the basin, they caught on hoppers and CDC patterns casting to rising fish.

Eyebrooks sister water Draycote held the Trout Masters final, a competition where anglers fish both the bank and boats in sections throughout the day. Eyebrook member Mark Hunt fished representing the Eyebrook having won his fish off earlier in the year. Mark came a very respectable 9^th out of a field of 90 anglers winning himself an engraved hip flask. Well done Mark, top angling! If you would like to be entered in the trout master’s competition please ask a member of staff for an entry form.

Fishery management guiding and tuition manger Tom Bird had two guided sessions on Eyebrook this week. Firstly with Mr Gary Brewster. Gary wanted to focus his session on top of the water sport, dries and washing line nymphs. He chose the right venture, Eyebrook is renowned for its dry fly action and Tom is an expert in dry fly selection and techniques so Gary was almost guaranteed to have an excellent day. Tom was aware of a lot of feeding fish in front of the dam wall and set his first few drifts to cover these fish. After a couple of drifts Gary had netted serval hard fighting fish but had also had many fish coming short of the dries or not committing to take them confidently, so Tom suggested looking at nymphs fished on a washing line strategy. Tom set a cast of a red headed diawl Bach, and a black diawl bach with a FAB (foam arsed blob) on the point to ensure the nymphs were close to the surface. This proved to be a deadly method and the fish kept pulling fo the rest of the day with Gary encountering many double hook ups. Gary finished the day with an estimated 20 fish to the boat but wasn’t finished there. Gary returned to Eyebrook the following day and fished a completely different method to target something else Eyebrook is renowned for, big brown trout. He fished with a fast sinking line and Tube fly and hooked what proved to be a 7lb specimen from near to the tower. Well done Gary on Two excellent days fishing. Tom was back on the water again the next day this time with Nigel Tranter, again focusing the methods at washing lines and dry fly fishing. Wednesday proved slightly more challenging. There were an extraordinary number of small buzzers hatching and also aphids being blown on the water leaving the trout with what would be a size 24 fly on the menu. This meant the fish became preoccupied on their tiny meals and were rising continuously in front of the dam. With the fish being so occupied on the surface, Tom knew he had to keep the nymphs no more than six inches down but thought dries would be hard to present with the fish only taking the smallest of patterns. He tied a cast with two boobies to keep Nigels nymphs right in the surface and found the fish would then take the size 14 Diawl Bachs he had fished with the day previous. Once he had found the method it was all systems go and Nigel was soon into fish.

Strong winds prevented boats being allowed out for Friday and Saturday leaving anglers with the dam wall as their best chance of catching fish. Saturday saw 6 anglers all fish the dam wall with surprising success. They caught 43 fish between them averaging 7 fish a rod! Mark Hunt in his own wards had a “brilliant session” catching on CDCs and Cochy-bondus. Mr Kippen and Mr Rodgerson caught a dozen fish between them on dries fishing the far end of the dam wall.

The blue trout trophy was fished on Sunday and proved to be the wettest and windiest blue trout on record! Horrible conditions, strong north winds and consistent rain left anglers drenched. The competition is fished as a pairs matched with pairs also being put into teams representing the English Disabled fly fishers and the Eyebrook. 20 anglers fished to a six fish kill, many found it a challenge with two pairs managing their limits. The pairs award went to Ian Reeves and Rob Inglis representing team Eyebrook with 6 fish for 11lb 13oz. Eyebrook also won the team event with 14 fish for 21lb 10oz.

Another productive week for Eyebrook. Boats anglers are enjoying the best of the sport, drifting the basin the fish remain spread across open water. The majority of fish now coming to fry patterns, ,minkies, zonkers or snakes doing particularly well fished from a floating or intermediate line. Several anglers have mentioned catching fish from around the weed beds at the north of the Reservoir. Corixa or floating fry patterns are the best way to target these resident fish. There have been several notable catches of big fry feeding browns. The best being a 7lb 12oz brown caught by warden Toff Crowther. (all brown trout are to be retuned).

Bank anglers are finding more fish in the margins now. Chris Bates fished at the Cowshed and caught 4 fish feeding around the weed beds. The netted bank has also been producing good sport particularly on over cast day with a south or south Easterly wind.

Pike fly fishing has been particularly excellent this season with the record being broken several times. This week we haven’t heard of any monsters but plenty of fish to 20lbs being caught. Please remember pike fishing is strictly fly only!

Brent Hart had the first big brown of the week, weighing 7lb. Brent caught the specimen from his float tube whilst fishing near the tower. (there is no launch free for tubes at Eyebrook) There were also a lot of fish coming to dry flies earlier in the week. Ed Douglas had 25 fish on dries from across the basin and D Skedd caught 12 fish to a Red Klinkhammer.

There have been several good quality rainbows caught this week, many getting close to the 4lb mark. Mr Birkett and Mr Ninal caught very well once again with 30 fish to the boat. Their fish came to Black buzzers on a size 14 or hares ears on a size 12. Mr Coley and Mr Taft fished with slim lines and fry patterns to nett a dozen fish from infront of the dam wall. Gareth Debenham caught 2 browns in four casts whilst anchored near to the towers. The biggest was around the 5lb mark. Gareth’s fish both took a minkie fished on an intermediate line.

Wednesday fished well with 207 fish being caught by 33 anglers for an average of 6.3. Pete Reeve had a good session and fished traditional wet flies such as silver Invicta’s and an Alexandras. Father and son team Clive and Jamie Moore boat fished with floating lines, blobs and minkies and had an excellent day catching 30 fish between them from across the basin.

Colder nights and a wet day Saturday did slow things down somewhat. Most fish coming to fry patterns around 2 feet below the surface. The wind had changed to a south for Friday allowing Keith Johnson to bank fish from the netted bank. Keith caught 5 fish close in the margins.

Sunday saw the average back to 3.9 fish a rod with warmer conditions there were noticeably more fish feeding on the surface. Clarets hoppers or daddies worked for several anglers, as did floating fry or popper minkies for others. Clive Wilkins caught 16 fish on Daddies. Mick Hill and boat partner A Nowak caught over twenty fish between them on Boobie, dries and Diawl bachs whilst drifting into the three trees.

The forecast for the week is for much warmers days with temperatures set to return to 20 degrees.

A very busy week & a great weeks fishing at the Eyebrook with the majority of the trout caught in the upper 2ft with floating lines, midge tips & intermediates being the only lines you require.

Monday we had a number of anglers out practicing for the Police Pairs competition organised by Steve Owen, on match day fishing to a 4 fish kill limit they averaged 3.9 the eventual winning pair were Rodger Symonds & Chris Howkins with Graham Homer & Roy Taylor second.

Wednesday was another busy day with a rod average 5.5 with anglers catching on small daddies, diawl bach, cdc. Mr Firth & A Whale down on our fishing packages caught 28 on cdc. We started to see the autumnal change with the first few fish consistently hitting the fry around the valve tower and small buoys.

Friday Firth & Whale continued to catch on the cdc patterns boating 17, with several anglers out on the water practicing for the AMFC competition the following day, most reported good catches with fish taken on a variety of patterns from fabs to dries although they all agreed, you didn’t need to fish anything faster than an intermediate.

Saturday morning & the wind was back in the south west a gentle 9 mph breeze, conditions looked good for the 36 AMFC competitors fishing to a 4 fish kill + 4 fish catch & release. The average for the competition was 7.8 with the winning team Fish Hawkes closely followed by Invicta A. Member Bob Margery caught 12 during his mornings visit on a cats whisker & diawl

Sunday and a cold northerly wind did slow the catches although member S Lawrence caught 12 for his mornings visit with James Brittan catching 11 on a variet of patterns, diawl, blobs & boobies. Derby Angling Club returned a rod average of 4.2 for their visit

With the water temperature dropping off fast we are now allowing pike fly fishing again. Further reports of pike of over 20lbs been caught over the weekend with a 29lb4oz pike pictured on our Facebook page Flyfishstore along with a photo of Rick Varley 31lb pike caught the week before. Fly fishing is the only permitted method allowed at Eyebrook. The Eyebrook record currently stands at 31lb and is shared by Rick Varley & Jobe Burnham who caught his earlier this year on the fly. So far this season we have had snow, rain and coloured water followed by gin clear water and ridiculous temperatures, so it was about time we had some gale force winds just to slow things down again. It has certainly been a frustrating season! On two occasions this week we were unable to allow the boats out.

Fishing has certainly been mixed this week, mainly due to tough conditions on the windy days. Boats are still enjoying the best of the sport. The fish remain high in the water even in a rough conditions and are certainly on the feed. Happy to chase most flies through the surface, blobs, boobies or floating fry patterns are attracting a lot of interest. Fish are still coming to daddies and hoppers too, particularly on the warmer stiller days. Most fish are holding across the basin and remain evenly spread. More fish are showing an interest in the fry across the dam wall and into Harrison’s corner. Still quiet past the island with only the odd better-quality fish putting in an appearance. Bank anglers have found things tricky this week with the wind speed and directions. The Island has proved most successful in a north or north westerly and the dam wall in a south or south westerly. Fry patterns or corixa patterns working best fished just under the surface.

Monday got the week off to an absolute flier with 26 anglers catching 252 fish for a very impressive average of 9.7! There were mentions of a mixture of patterns on the returns sheet. Dave Shaer caught his fish on black buzzers and daddies. Andy Birkett caught extremely well om hoppers, hares’ ears and very small buzzers. Bill Woods and Hugh Munro had an exceptional day returning over 40 fish on small black dries or small daddies. Most boats starting their drifts at the tower and finishing off at the netted bank.

Tuesday was a blustery one and winds getting close to the 25mph maximum that we are able to allow boats out in. Every boat took shelter out from the lodge corner as anchors struggled to hold. John Wilson had a good session returning a dozen fish that came to daddies. Members Roy Swinfield and Lindsay Bates were lucky their anchor held just off the tower where there were a lot of feeding fish. They caught nearly 20 fish each on buzzers or Diawl bachs fished on a washing line.

No boats out on Wednesday meant it was bank fishing or no fishing. The wind blew strong from the Leicester bank. The Island, Belle or dam wall were the only places anglers could get a respectable line out. Fry patterns along the dam wall worked as well as anything.

Ten anglers called the Paisley Patterns managed to fish two of their three day package. They all caught fish on Thursday with 87 fish returned between them. Most of the fish came to buzzers, Diawl bachs or CDC patterns from across the basin. Dave Scholefield had an exceptional morning with 18 fish to the boat. Dave fished small buzzers on a washing line.

57 anglers fished on Saturday which proved to be the best conditions of the week and between them caught 287 fish for an average of 5.13. Lots of fish coming to the dries again with orange bodied daddies being a favourite. Mr Lynch and Mr Mcnaughton got stuck in and returned over 30 fish between them that were all caught in the top 3ft. Boobies, blobs or dries doing the damage. The Paisley Patterns were back on the water again and this time took 91 fish between them again all from on or just under the surface. Member Bob Margery had an interesting day. He struggled up until lunch time having only a couple of fish but found the afternoon fished much better and caught 9 fish on Diawl bachs and a cat’s whisker. Mr Hancox and Mr Price targeted the fry feeders with snake patterns and were rewarded with 18 fish between them from across the basin.

Mixed returns for Sunday, bank anglers struggled in the north winds and the cold air temperatures meant the fish were reluctant to feed off the surface. Most fish came to lures and blobs pulled on a slow intermediate line. Ian Jobe found an area of fry feeders in the basin and fished with a small snake to have a bonanza of a day. He caught 25 fish including two browns and had several fully finned fish of over 4lbs. Mark Goodge and Ian Bradfield did fish dries and manged 19 fish between them.

With the water temperature now dropping off fast we are now allowing pike fly fishing again. There have been reports of pike of over 20lbs been caught over the weekend and perch of over 3lbs. Pike are a great alternative species to target on the fly. The Eyebrook record currently stands at 31lb and was caught earlier this year on the fly by Jobe Burnham, photo on our Facebook page. Another excellent and extremely busy week at the brook. Water temperature is now down to 16 degrees and the trout and very active. Boat anglers have been enjoying most of the sport and the fish remain evenly spread across the main basin. Dries are still proving to take most of the fish. Daddies or hoppers both working well. Bank anglers are starting to have better returns, fishing the Belle, Dam wall or Island, with the Island producing some very good quality fish.
Varied returns for Monday due to the strong westerly, which by midday was gusting to 25 mph plus. A lot of boats took shelter along the Leicester bank. Others did drift and had better results fishing in the rough water off the Netted bank and Robbos cabin. Tony Day had a respectable afternoons fishing. Catching and returning 8 fish that all took a foam daddy fished in the wave. Member Bill Law fished with hoppers and black nymphs, whilst drifting the basin to successfully net 8 fish. He came off the water soon before mid-day as the wind got the better of him. Ian Rumbold caught 10 fish on a hopper tied with lots of CDC to give it extra buoyancy and small black buzzers. Ian had a couple of double hooks up and he was pleased to net both fish before they made a mess of his cast! David Priestly and Naomi Sharp boat fished with daddies. The pair caught 8 fish one of which was a fin perfect brown trout of 4lb. Most probably one of our wild stock. (we ask all brown trout are to be returned) A stocking of 1010 rainbows from West acre trout farm will kept the good sport going throughout the week. Todate we have stocked 18,742 fish and with a stock level of 14,030 fish there’s plenty out there to be caught!
Tuesday was again set to be ‘rough at sea’ however wasn’t as bad as first forecast. Most boats drifted the basin into the three trees or netted bank. In house guide Lee Henfrey took Mr John O’hara for a guided day on Eyebrook. Lees been having great success on foam daddies recently and John was excited to get onto the water to learn how its done. John extremely pleased to master the technique and used it to great success catching over 20 fish to the boat. There was a noticeable change on the returns page with nymphs being mentioned often. Buzzers or diawl bachs accounted for most of the fish with small patterns being key to success. Size 14 Black Diawl Bachs or buzzers fished washing line whilst drifting the basin had most success.
Perfect conditions to start the day Wednesday meant dries worked particularly well. Draycote member Ed Douglas had another very successful visit to the Eyebrook. Netting over 20 fish all to the dry fly. Ed found some better fish out from the Island. Members Clive Moore and Ian Jobe boat fished, as they do every Wednesday. The pair had a steady morning, having only a couple of fish each to the boat by mid-day they were left wondering what was going wrong! After a ‘team talk’ and speaking with the wardens the pair were back on the water and had a great afternoon! The fish came to various patterns all on a floating line, with blobs and small snake patterns taking the majority. The highlight of the day was a 6lb 10 oz rainbow that Ian caught on a mini snake pattern from the middle of the basin. The fish was safely returned to grow on even bigger. Fry patterns are becoming a common mention on the returns page now. Cats Whiskers, floating fry, popper minkies, snakes, zonkers or humungous patterns are certainly worth a go. Thornton member Mr C Sayre fished from an anchored boat in the corner of the dam known as Harrisons corner. He covered his options and fished with nymphs using a humungous booby as a point fly to keep the nymphs high in the water. He found small black buzzers worked best and the fish would also take the booby. Bank fishing is certainly improving with the fish looking for food around the weed beds. Member Mark Hunt bank fished the Island on Wednesday evening with great success. With a good hatch of buzzers and sedge there were plenty of fish on the top to cast too. Mark fished a hares ear CDC or yellow owl to take 8 fish with many other offers.
Dave Willacy enjoyed part one of his three-day break fishing Eyebrook and Draycote. He fished dry daddies from a drifting boat from various areas of the main basin. He was pleased to catch and release a dozen fish on Wednesday and over 20 on Thursday
Syngenta had a corporate event at Eyebrook on Friday. 14 boats of experienced and novice anglers took to the water after a hearty breakfast. Various methods worked. Dries, blobs or lures fished high in the water. Best bag of 4 fish went to Robin Hix, with 4 fish for 9lb 2 oz, Robin also caught the biggest fish of 3lb 1oz. The best boat award went to Tim Burn and Jon Bellamy with an impressive return of 34 fish between them! Good Angling! 28 anglers caught over 150 fish to give an average of over 5 fish per rod! Eyebrook held the England Ladies national Eliminator other the weekend. 16 ladies from across the country fished to an 8 fish kill and time bonuses. Everyone knew it was going to be an extremely close match after practise had gone so well for every angler on Saturday, but we didn’t expect only 3 oz’s to determine 8th, 9th and 10 th places. Consistently good sport once again at Eyebrook. Conditions played more of a part this week, a couple of blustery days meant anglers had to change methods to achieve the best results. Generally dries are doing the damage. There’s the odd daddy getting onto the water now , we’ve also seen several good hatches of small buzzers and sedge bringing the fish into the surface more into the evenings. The fish remain very spread across open water, drifts from the Hawthorns to Robbos or Tower to Three trees in a south westerly wind as proving most successful. There are now fish moving out from the Chestnut Tree to Pollards Jump, but little showing past this point. The first sign of fry feeders in front of the dam wall have been reported. Anglers saw very big brownies crashed through the surface. Maybe a popper minkie or floating fry pattern will be worth a try on your next visit?

The week got off to a flyer with plenty of fish showing across the basin. Daddy’s, Big reds, Bobs Bits and CDCs were all mentioned on the returns page. MR Thompson took ten fish on a black bobs bit whilst drifting the basin. Mr Glover caught 15 fish on daddies and a big red.

The wind changed for Tuesday. A stronger North wind blew the length of reservoir and putting a chop across the basin. Daddies and hoppers did work but anglers fishing slow intermediates with black cormorants or blobs took most of the fish. Pete Reynolds had a super time fishing in to the netted back on cormorants or small black and green boobies and took nearly 20 fish. Mr Petch and Mr Loyd persevered with foam daddies in the wave and caught 14 fish and had many others follow the fly without converting into a take.

The English Disabled Fly fishers were out in force on Wednesday for their annual National Eliminator. The north wind had hung on, putting a cold chill on the water. Not many fish seen on the surface, but they weren’t far down. Most anglers fished with a floating line with nymph’s or a slow sinking line with blobs boobies or mini lures. Mick Hill was the only angler to catch his limit bag of 8 fish for a total weight of 14lb and 1oz. Mick also caught the biggest fish at 2lb and 8oz. Pleasure angler Simon Kolkowski had a very successful afternoons session. Simon fished a team of traditional wet flies in the wave to catch 8 fish. A silver Invicta or wingless Wickham’s tied on a size 16 were irresistible to the fish!

Thursday was much more settled, and fish were right back into the surface. Bob Cooper and Rab Clemenets both fished with dry daddies and caught 40 fish between them for a morning session. Nigel Vieber fished with Guide and fishery warden Lee Hefrey and caught nearly 20 fish for his morning session. R Vigus was very pleased with a 5lb brown trout he caught off the Hawthorn hedge. Member Bob Margery found feeding fish in front of the dam wall and fished his own hot headed Diawl bach to great success. He caught and returned 11 fish whilst fishing a floating line. Kieth Johnson also fished similar tactics but he chose to fish an orange hot head diawl bach with great success and netted 10 fish.

Eyebrook held another very successful tuition day on Saturday. Seven new anglers were introduced to the sport and learnt the art of casting, fly selection, knots and water craft. Tuition days are a great way to get into fly fishing and make a great gift. We only have one day left at Eyebrook with limited spaces. Fishing was a little slower over the weekend with the windier conditions. Saturday Averaged 4.1 fish a rod and Sunday 3.06. Again, daddies or popper hoppers worked pulled through the wave. Mr Armitage took 6 fish on a small blue flash damsel fished near to the surface. Andy Gallacher and John Punt caught nearly 20 fish for their morning session, whilst drifting into Robbos. They fished with natural coloured daddies.
