Most days this week saw nice fishing conditions with warm overcast days although on Friday and Saturday we experienced some longer periods of sunshine. The winds were mostly moderate coming from the south west although on Wednesday, we had much stronger blustery winds that made fishing a bit more difficult.
With our water temperatures maintaining at or about 15 degrees all week, and some cooler autumnal weather during the week, the fish have begun to respond positively. Which has resulted in an improvement of the fishing over the week, which is what we would expect as we enter the start of our back-end fishing.
Overall this week, anglers fishing from the boats or float tubes have had much better results than the bank anglers although we are starting to see a few fish caught in the margins along the Leicestershire bank from the Hawthorns down to the Bell.
A further stocking of nearly 700 fish took place this week, bringing our current stocking to over 18,000 rainbows, and with further stockings planned, we are on course to stock 20,000 trout for the season. With a good stock level and cooling water temperatures, we are anticipating some excellent sport over the next few weeks. Favoured tactics during the back end of the season will be daddies, hoppers & sedges or fry patterns for those trout targeting the large shoals of fry.
We would kindly ask all anglers to ensure they complete their catch return after completing their session as this not only helps informs us on the stock levels but enables the staff to know who is still on site.
On Monday morning, Colin Brown went afloat with in house guide, Andy Miller, and took six fine fish, all falling to a team of crunchers drifting across the main basin. (see the report on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore). Ian Jobe was on the water in his float tube and netted 6 whilst Peter Nesbitt used boobies for his 4 fish. On Tuesday season ticket holder Simon Kolkowski took 8 fish to the boat whilst Andre Russell in his float tube and took 3 fish. Mr Gibson had 4 on foam daddies drifting around the Main Basin.
11 members of the Higham Ferrers Fly Fishers visited the reservoir on Wednesday and landed 25 fish between them. Gary Ashman landed nine on black tadpoles whilst Tony Day had seven. Ian Jobe this time in a boat, for his second visit of the week and took another three fish, finding the gusty winds more challenging to present the flies. Mr Johnson, also out in boat used a red Holographic cruncher on a floating line for his six fish.
Thursday and Friday saw an upturn in the sport with some double figure catches recorded. Douglas Skedd enjoyed good fishing on both days recording nearly forty fish over the two days, Cormorants and Gold Ribbed Diawl Bachs being the successful flies. Peter Nesbitt also used Cormorants as well as Boobies for his ten fish whilst Mr Farrell had over twenty on a Blob fished deep with a DI5. Mark Hunt started his afternoon session on a DI5 as well, but as the fish started to move on top, switched to his favoured dries to land seven.
Despite the sun, the fishing remained good over the weekend. Wayne Dent and his boat partner, Kevin Dinning, landed seventeen during their morning session whilst Nick Dunn and his boat partner took twenty fish on daddies with a Diawl Bach in the middle throughout the main basin. The Sackfields had eight to their boat whilst Mr Kirk and his partner had nine.
A bright start to Sunday with the cloud arriving later in the day, resulting in near perfect conditions in the afternoon. With such conditions the best catches came from tactics fished high in the water either washing lining or dries. All water season ticket holder Neil Shilton used dries around the Main Basin to land 17 fish. Bob Thompson used Daddies on a washing line to tempt 15 hard fighting fish to the boat. Another angler who used daddies to great effect on the washing line was Mr R Kingston who boated 16 fish mainly on Daddies. Although some fish did call to a cat’s whisker, Mr Kingston found the main basin to be the best area. Mr C Adams & J Maxwell used dries to enjoy great sport taking 27 fish.
With Daddies featuring heavily on the catch returns, our Guiding & Tuition Manager Tom Bird has put together a Daddy Selection with 6 flies of our guides top 3 patterns. These are available from our online shop www.flyfishstore.co.uk
Methods to fish these patterns are discussed in detail in an article penned by Tom Bird which can be found on our tuition website www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/latest-report/
Pike Fishing
As we move into the autumn our pike fishing as yet hasn’t produced the 30lb fish we saw last year, with the Eyebrook season closing on the 31st October these next couple of months could give us the right conditions to see another Eyebrook 30lb+ pike.
