Eyebrook Reservoir; Fishery Update for week to 21st August 2019

The week ending on Sunday 18th was, like the previous week, very unsettled which was probably responsible for the disappointing overall weekly catch return of 1.2, with daily catch returns fluctuating from a poor 0.8 to two days when it topped 3.5. This week though the weather has been kind to us with more settled conditions which have been to the fishes liking. The cooler weather during the day and the slight autumnal feel to the evenings has seen our water temperature fall and remain constant so far this week at 17 degrees.
The cooler water has seen many of the resident fish return to the top few feet of the reservoir where they have been tempted by dries imitating the insect life which is continuing to hatch in good numbers. We are also seeing an increasing number of daddies around the lodge. The large shoals of fry are still lying along the dam wall, from in front of the lodge to Dogswood Bay and in and around the weedbeds in Sam’s Dyke.
UPTURN IN THE SPORT. Monday saw a very pleasing upturn in sport with Paul Walker taking thirteen fish on Diawl Bachs and Crunchers. Ollie mills fished daddies on Tuesday to net 11 whilst the Gills, sharing a boat, for the day, landed 10 on Diawl Bachs. However, all water member Norman Perkins fished deep with a white lure and netted nine. Wednesday saw the sport improve further with a daily rod average over 5.0. Season ticket holders Clive Moore and Ian Jobe both recorded double figure returns using Minkie’s fished sub surface. Ollie Mills had another double figure catch, whilst Mark Hunt had an enjoyable evening fishing daddies and landed six. Clarity is good.
With a settled forecast for the bank holiday weekend, a water temperature of around 17 to 18 degrees and a large number of resident fish in the reservoir, the outlook for the bank holiday weekend is good. The large amount of naturals and abundant fry shoals should provide opportunities for anglers fishing either the dry fly, teams of naturals fished straight lined or on a washing line, or fry imitating lure patterns.

Pike Fishing
With the water temperature cooling, although pike fishing has continued to be available, only a few pike anglers have ventured onto the water. Although no big fish have been taken, we are starting to see signs of an increase in pike activity with several smaller fish being taken. With the cooling weather as we come to the end of the summer months and the decreasing water temperature, prospects should start to improve. Pike fishing is fly only, limited to a maximum of 5 boats per day. Visiting pike anglers should also check the specific pike fishing regulations which can be found on the fishery website. This year we will also be offering guided pike fishing with our in-house guides. Fishing Buddy Required
Novice fisherman requires a boat buddy for midweek fishing trips to Eyebrook two to three times a month between the hours 10am and 6pm. Contact John on 07811138274.
Don’t forget to pick up your loyalty card from the lodge, once you have purchased 10 of the same permits, your next visit of that permit option is FREE valid at all three fisheries, Thornton, Draycote and Eyebrook
