Weather Forecasts: Were often asked which weather forecast we use, from our experience unfortunately we no longer find the BBC regional one to be accurate enough, with too many days lost to inaccurate local forecast. We recommend for Eyebrook you use XC Weather available as an App on your phone or download to your computer, put in the fisheries postcode LE16 8RP
We enjoyed varied summer conditions for most of the week, with warm sunny days and light winds interspersed with overcast conditions and on occasions some periods of rain. These conditions were certainly to the liking of the local insect life which was at times hatching off in prodigious numbers. Although it was pleasant fishing conditions, the abundance of natural food resulted in periods of preoccupation by the fish which caused a lot of frustration for the anglers who were reporting lots of fish all over the fishery, from the dam, Robbo, Hawthorns, Sams Dyke, Mucky Bay and down Stoke Dry They were however difficult to tempt with a natural imitation, but they were feeding hard on the abundance of damsels, pin fry and sedges as was evident from the fish that were spooned.
Monday was probably the best day of the week with the rod average topping 4, Simon K taking 11, Ollie Mills had 5 on dries whilst season ticket holders Lyndsey Bates and Roy Swinfield landed 16 to their boat. Tuesday saw better conditions, but the massive damsel hatch resulted in a lot of preoccupation. Peter Allen landed 8 on crunchers whilst Ollie Mills had 8 in an afternoon session using Hoppers
Wednesday saw bright conditions with a light breeze which kept swirling around. This combination caused difficulties in presentation and the anglers were finding fish hard to come by, only odd fish being caught. Thursday was a bit better with Bill Whittle and Tim Groves both taking 5 fish whilst Malcom Thompson also had 5 but his were from the bank. Best fish though was a nice 4-pound brownie which was returned by Neil Shilton.
Friday was bright and sunny all day with a very light westerly breeze and unfortunately several anglers were beaten by the conditions and were unable to tempt fish. Ian Jobe though landed 5 from his float tube. Saturday remained overcast all day with a few light showers in the afternoon and the fishing improved on the previous day. Malcolm Thompson again fished from the Bank near the hawthorns and was rewarded with three fish whilst Mr Haddon had 5 and Mr Gardner had 4 fishing dry damsels from their boat in Mucky Bay.
Sunday saw a visit by 24 members of the Mid Northants Fly fishers, fishing for the Eric Goodman Trophy. Top rod was Mark Frost who 4 fish bag weight was 7 pounds 11 ounces with a best fish of just under 4pounds. Barry Jones landed seven, but the four fish weighed in was insufficient to get into the top three. Best fish of the day though was a rainbow estimated at approximately 8lb+ taken and safely returned by Barry Jones. Photos of this fish and the winners can be seen on our Facebook page. Neil Shilton again took to his float tube to land 5 fish.
Pike Fishing
The pike fishing continues in a similar trend to that of previous weeks with the jacks more than willing to take resulting in a lot of fish in the 5 to 8-pound range. The big girls still seem unwilling to take the fly although some will follow and then pull away.. Pike fishing will continue (water temperatures permitting) until we close the fishery on the 3st October. Pike fishing is fly only, is limited to a maximum of 5 boats per day and it is recommended that visiting pike anglers check the specific pike fishing regulations which can be found on the fishery website. This year we will also be offering guided pike fishing with our in-house guides. Further details are available on our guiding and Tuition website ( http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk) or by contacting our guiding manager Tom Bird on 01788 812018.
