What a change, the weather has been a complete contrast from last week. 40 mph winds and heavy rain for the start of the week, but it’s just what the reservoir needed to fish well again. With the water temperature, back to average for June. The fish have returned to the top few feet of the water level. Fish can be seen feeding in the surface, so dries are working well from both the bank or boat. Ginger Middas, orange or claret hoppers and shipman’s buzzers all being successful. Nymphs also continue to catch fish. Preferably fish in the top few inches with a buoyant fly on the point. Most boat anglers have fished inftront of the dam wall mainly trying to find shelter from the strong south westerly winds. Bank anglers are catching well again. The Belle and Hawthorn hedge being top spots but fish have been caught from around the Island and into Mucky bay. Mainly on nymphs, red holographic dial bachs, green dial bachs or size 12 and 14 black buzzers.
Monday saw the first day of the volatile weather. 20 mph winds and heavy showers, meant it wasn’t going to be the most comfortable day for boat fishing. Andrew Bentley and Peter Andrews didn’t mind though, their rods kept bending. Catching over 20 fish between them. A blob top dropper followed by two black buzzers size 10 and 12 doing the damaged, fished at around 20 feet on a Di5 sinking line.
Tuesday was the first day of noticeable change in water temperature. Unfortunately, however wind speeds of 25mph and gusts to 45 prevented the boats from going out. There were however two hardy bank anglers fighting against the wind. Mr Foulds and Mr Allison had hoped to boat fish but weren’t disappointed to fish the bank after they returned to the lodge having caught 41 fish between them. Giving Tuesday a rod average of 20.5 fish per rod. Its fishing its head off! The pair fished the Hawthorn hedge to Sam’s Dyke with green dial bachs fish on a washing line. Fish could be seen, moving in the surface in a few feet of water making them an easy cast to reach from the bank.
The winds dropped slightly on Wednesday allowing the boats out again. It wasn’t particularly comfortable though, most boat anglers taking shelter in Dogwood bay or the Belle. Clive Moore and Ian Jobe caught a dozen between them from the Hawthorn Hedge bay, fishing buzzers high in the water. Bob Thompson had a good afternoon catching 5 nicely silvered fish on a selection of dry flies, bobs bits, crippled midge and a CDC. The rod average remained high, not as high as Tuesday though, a more realistic 9.09, not bad for the second week of June !
Winds were lighter still for Thursday, and fish could be seen frequently taking from the surface. Nicklamyman and Bill Hill bank fished the Belle catching nearly 20 fish between them on a selection of nymphs. David Moore and friends boat fished, all catching extremely well from boats drifting the basin. Most opted to fish dries, ginger Middas and claret hoppers taking the vast majority of their fish. Mark Hunt made a late appears to fish the evening rise, he wasn’t disappointed to hear the fish had been rising all day and wish he’d arrived earlier. He tucked his boat in the slack water behind the Island and fished dries. Shipmans buzzers and Daddies accounting for his 11 fish.
The excellent fishing continued for Friday and into the weekend, Sean Glover and Dave Gregory had a good day, netting a dozen fish each on nymphs fished on a washing line. Chis Hubbard also had a successful session, constantly catching fish from the main basin of various methods. John Honey caught well on Saturday catching 20 plus fish on a red dial bach from the dam and the cowshed to the turn rafts..Alex Booth Fly Fishers enjoyed their group visit. 14 anglers boat fished and caught 33fish between them weighing 66lbs 7ozs. Top rod on the day was Vic Byrne catching 6 fish for a weight of 12lbs plus 2 hour time bonus. best fish was caught by Jeff Savidgeweighing 2lbs 9ozs. Bob Clark and boat partner Joe Mollinson drifted from the Belle and both caught well on candy or tequilla blobs or a green cruncher.
Most boats opted to drift the main basin, with a few finding shelter in Mucky bay and found fish there too. Best methods were ginger or orange dries, dial bachs and damsel nymphs.
