‘Challenging’ conditions this week at Eyebrook. Strong northerly winds, hail storms, snow and heavy rain didn’t help matters! With sharp frosts at night mid-week the water temperature has fallen to 12.4c resulting in more moderate buzzer hatches and less fly life on the water. The rod average this week remained at a healthy 4.88 fish per rod however. Wind permitting the Chestnut tree, Cowshed through to the turn rafts have proved the best areas for the boats, drifting or anchored nymphs fished high in the water are still taking the majority of fish. Crunchers, Diawl bachs, and buzzers, preferably tied with a small amount of red seem to be doing better, fished with a booby or FAB on the point. Bank anglers haven’t been able to be too fussy where they fish due to the unfavourable winds. Most have fished the Island into Sams Dyke or Stoke dry where most have found fish. Similar tactics, floating lines with nymphs or emerger patterns.
The week started well, Monday saw highs of 14c with a steady north westerly wind, fish could be seen feeding up wind. Mr Knapp enjoyed a good days fishing to celebrate his birthday, boating 18 good fish on black buzzers and a booby fished on the point. Mr Couldrick and Mr Mitchel enjoyed the last day of their 3 day visit. Netting over twenty fish they drifted the cowshed to chestnut tree and caught well on nymphs. Mr J Bale went against the standard practice of ‘Matching the hatch’ and fished a dry daddy. The method seamed mad but it worked! Fishing from the bank he netted 7 very nice fish and had many other offers.
Winter returned on Tuesday. Strong north winds brought almost blizzard like conditions. Gerry Horner fished with his son Richard. Gerry caught 5 fish on buzzers and Richard had just the one. They found when the wind did drop slightly the fish would come up in the water to feed on buzzers. Wednesday was much the same with only a hand full of boat anglers braving the conditions.
Conditions were much improved on Thursday and the rod average reflected this, averaging just under four fish a rod. Gerry and Richard Horner were a float again, making the most of their weeks’ holiday. Between them they boated 8 fish including two very nice silvered rainbows of 3lb 2 and 3lb 6. Regular Roy Swinfield was on the bank once again, fishing crunchers and hog lice patterns he got stuck in and netted over twenty fish from around the Island. Horace Wood had a morning boat fishing, anchoring at Norris Dyke he fished a team on buzzers and caught steadily throughout the morning. He commented on just how well the fish fight.
Friday was an extremely busy day at the Brook. Bill Stewart was first on the bank, bright and early. He fished a washing line consisting of a black buzzer, cruncher and a FAB on the point. He caught 10 fish on a mixture of all three flies. Graham Clark fished the bank using a similar washing line technique. Graham added a gold ribbed hares ear to his cast and caught over twenty fish once again on all three of his chosen flies. Peter Nesbit had his second outing of the week, fishing straight lined buzzers he caught 12 good fish from a boat at the Cowshed. David Moddy had a good day, fishing small black dry flies he boated 5 extremely nice fish. Mr Rowson and Mr Cowan drifted all day and covered the water, finding fish feeding just under the surface on buzzers the pair caught constantly on drifts between the chestnut and the turn raft.
Saturday saw The Scierra pairs return to the Eyebrook, 7 pairs battled it out for a place in the final to be held at LlynBrenig. First back to the pontoon were Phil Longstaff and Gary Owen at 11.45, returning with 16 fish for a weight of 27lb 13oz they looked to be in a strong position. They were quickly followed by Belgium pair Geert Jansseens and Christian Jadouille the pair weighed in 16 fish for 34 lb 1oz which gave them a clear lead. Geert and Christian had worked out during practise that nymphs were picking up the better fish so they opted to fish a floating line and crunchers. The Belgium’s went on to win the heat in style. Riccardo Saccone and Martin took second place leaving the first boat back in taking third. Dixie and Rich took the best fish weighing 3lb 10 oz and won a trip down to the Golden Grove Fishery.
Eyebrook also held its heat of the Trout Masters qualifier on Saturday which was won by Mark Hunt. He caught his 4 fish within three hours for a total weight of 8lb 4 oz. Mark fished the Island with nymphs on a floating line.
Conditions changed again on Sunday making the fish hard to find. With 30 mph gusts anchors struggled to hold in the rougher water and most boats opted to fish the more sheltered wood side bank. 30 anglers fished the friendly competition ‘Bennetts Bash’which was won by Nick Findlay and Grant McMurry. Regulars Dave Chadwick, Bob Margery and Steve Lawrence bank fished together at Stoke dry road. All three of which caught plenty of fish, mainly falling to blobs and a good old cats’ whisker on the point.
The forecast is looking much improved for the week ahead, overcast with winds up to 15mph, we hope to see more fish feeding on the surface.
