Fishery Report: Week Ending: Sunday 15th March
Monday 9th March and the fishing continues to be tough. The water clarity is still improving, and this will only get better over the next week as the weather starts to settle. A small number of anglers have ventured out and managed to whittle out the occasional fish with the bank anglers outperforming the boats.
Tuesday, the weather conditions were yet again unfavourable.
Wednesday, what a difference from yesterday. A beautify sunny morning with a gentle breeze. Water clarity was around 18 inches plus. Despite the slightly better conditions, the fishing was still hard with only a few trout caught. Pike anglers were on the water in both boats and float tubes and a fine looking 26 pounder was the pick of the pike caught.
Thursday saw the return of heavy winds and rain which not only prevented the boats going out but deterred the bank anglers. With the clarity now at about 30 inches, Friday was a much better day with light winds and brighter conditions, and the fish responded. Fishing from the bank, Stewart Normington had 14 fish to cats whiskers whilst Keith Stringer had 9 on green and black tadpoles. Mark Hunt fished in the afternoon and had 6 on cormorants whilst Matt Lane went afloat in his tube and took four. Alan Vivian and his boat partner were afloat and had 6 fish to the boat on orange blobs. Some pike were also caught, with the best being low doubles. A welcome sight late afternoon Friday was a small hatch resulting in lots of fish topping on the surface, surely a harbinger of things to come.
There was heavy overnight rain which had largely stopped by Saturday morning, although it remained overcast all day. This rain and a slight increase in the water level didn’t affect sport as the fishing, particularly from the Leicestershire bank, was excellent. Several double figure catches were recorded, the best being 19 fish. Pleasingly fish were caught in several areas of the reservoir including the Bell, Dogwood, Hawthorns, Chestnut and Robbos. Successful patterns included blobs, diawl bachs, fritz’s and black palmers. Fish were also caught by the boat anglers with top rod being Eyebrook Flyfishers Chairman, Clive Moore, with 11 although other boats also recorded double figure catches. On Saturday we said “au revoir” to our regular pike anglers who won’t be back piking until June 16th when we resume piking. During the few days we were open, there were several doubles taken with the best fish being one of 26 pounds taken from a float tube.
Saturday saw around 13 anglers catching into double figures from both the bank and boat. The fish are holding in quite close to the bank and some anglers reporting fish taking right under the rod tip. A variation of methods are picking up fish but most bank anglers were reporting that fish are taking Diawl Bachs and other nymphs as well as the lures.
Sunday was a bit rough on the weather front, but this did not deter season ticket holders Steve Lawrence and Dave Chadwick from catching in to double figures each.
It now looks like Eyebrook is coming on to form just in time for the Scierra Pairs competition on the 29th March 20.
