Conditions made things hard this week. strong winds over the weekend resulted in no boats on the water. Earlier in the week fished well on fry patterns and washing line nymphs. Water temperature remains at 13.0 degrees.
During the week boats were concentrating in Dogwood bay, dam wall and The Island. Most anglers fishing fry patterns or nymphs high in the water. Bank anglers have been catching fish. The Stones and Dogwood bay proving to be worth a look as is the Island and Chestnut tree. First thing in the morning seems to be the best time to target the fry feeders in the margins.
Mervyn White had a red-letter day on Tuesday with boat partner Mr D Pink. They caught twenty plus fish on a trusty cat’s whisker fished high in the water in front of the dam wall. Members Stuart Bilsdon and John Woodings found feeding fish off the tower. They targeted them with a black and green lure fished on a floating line.
Wednesday saw the annual English Disabled Fly Fishers Fur and Feather match. Fished to fishery rules, 12 anglers caught 33 fish. John Thompson was victorious on the day catching 6 fish and taking his 3 fish limit for 6lb 10oz. John also caught the best fish of the day, a 3lb 6 oz silvered rainbow. Pictures and full results on the English disabled fly fishers facebook page. Please give them a ‘Like’.
Thursday fished well producing an average of 4.57. Ed Douglas spent the day with in house guide Lee Henfrey learning the best methods to fish with sinking lines. Ed certainly got the hang of it and caught throughout the day on Di3 and 5 lines with snakes and large fry patterns. Mr Armstrong also had a successful trip, catching over a dozen fish on a similar tactic. Snakes on a fast glass line worked best for him fished off the Island.
Returns were over 5 fish a rod for Friday. Lots of anglers reporting good numbers of feeding fish and vicious takes on fry patterns. Member Bob Margery caught over 20 fish whilst drifting the basin. He fished a hot head dial bach and a cat’s whisker. David and Reece Priestly had a cracking day on daddies. Drifitng the basin they caught over 25 fish and had many offers.
Returns weren’t so healthy over the weekend with no boats out only a hand full of bank anglers braved the strong winds. Most anglers fished Dogwood bay to the Hawthorns.
